TOKYO: Dennis Kipruto Kimetto defeated defending champion and fellow Kenyan Michael Kipkorir Kipyego to claim his first victory in the Tokyo marathon yesterday, one of the 6 World Marathon Majors, connected with the Rome Marathon by a close friendly relationship established in 2009.
Kimetto, the runner-up in his debut at Berlin last year, kept a narrow lead over Kipyego in the last 10km before crossing the finishing line in 2’06:50 in his second full distance marathon.The women’s race was won by Aberu
Kebede in 2:25:34, who made it an Ethiopian one-two with Yeshi Esayias in 2:26:01. Irina Mikitenko of Germany was third in 2:26:41.
First Japanese runners Kazuhiro Maeda (2h08:00) e Yoshimi Ozaki (2h28:30) won the Rome-Tokyo Trophy, presented by Franco Fava, from the Rome Marathon.
Governor of Tokyo Naoki Inose flagged off the race.
"Rome and Tokyo Marathons are united in the name of Abebe Bikila" - Inose said. "We wish we can host the 2020 Games and Rome the 2014 ones, just like we did in the Sixties" - he added.
Inosi will be at the Rome Marathon 2014 in order to relaunch the cooperation between the two events.
